<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
The highlight of the day was the ceremony
to acknowledge the recipient of the Fifth Annual Mentoring
award - an activity designed to bring increased awareness
to the importance of quality mentoring. The future success
of Lamont lies with the graduate students, the post docs and
the junior members of staff, - junior members of staff across
ALL segments of the observatory including the engineers, the
technicians and the administrators. So if we want a great
Lamont then we need to redouble our efforts in supporting
and helping – in mentoring – our junior colleagues.
From among a fabulous set of nominees this year, the award
was presented to Marc Spiegelman - congratulations Marc.
Thank you to Chris Zappa and all the
members of his committee for the great work in organizing
this competition and award event.
I was at a three day panel at NSF last
week and have spent one a half days carrying out the performance
reviews of all the Doherty staff, not to mention a Faculty
meeting, the annual budget meeting with the provost, an ad
hoc and the Earth institute's Global Change Round table. So
there has not been much free time…
This Sunday our public lecture features
one of our Alumni, Jeff Fox, Director of the Ocean Drilling
Program at Texas A&M – we expect a capacity crowd,
so if you want a seat please come early - 3pm Monell Auditorium.
If you see a crowd of folks wandering
the campus next Tuesday, do not panic - they are architects.
We are starting the process of architect selection for our
planned new Geochemistry building and this is a first step
that allows prospective bidders to review the site. We still
have some way to go before this project moves from being a
plan to a reality - but we remain on a very positive path
right now.
The sun is shining, the river actually
looks blue - so its time for the weekend - have a great one,
– Mike
