<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
This has been a tremendous week of activity, practically all
of which has been very positive and successful. The Observatory's
Advisory Board met on Wednesday afternoon, and were hosted
for a reception by Jeff Sachs at his home in mid town. This
was very well attended and clearly established the success
of our efforts to build a cadre of good friends and supporters
from both the local area and from among our alumni. Talk of
our new Geochemistry building and the need for raising new
endowment funds for salary support, not surprisingly, were
major topics of conversation.
On Thursday I chaired the inaugural meeting of the Executive
Board of CICAR (the NOAA cooperative institute led by Yochanan
Kushnir) - and thanks to Yochanan's good preparations this
was successful and productive, as was the daylong CICAR symposium
on the climate of the last millennium (held on Wednesday in
Monell). And on Friday, following an abbreviated ExCom, we
held a good discussion with representatives of Geochem to
decide upon the overall configuration (relative arrangement
of offices and labs) for the new building so the architect
can be guided appropriately. I am very pleased that a good
consensus was reached and clear direction can now be given
to the design team.
And tonight we are hosting a dinner for members of FOLD (Friends
of Lamont Doherty) - our lead donor group - again to talk
about strategies for developing new resources for the Observatory
in the long and short terms. Tomorrow, of course, is Open
House - and the weather promises to be very kind. It will
be another great day - we have a substantial number of distinguished
visitors and we are hosting a lunch for the Board of our Alumni
Association. I hope to find the time to visit some of the
exhibits myself!
Have a wonderful weekend - unfortunately for me Monday morning
will bring another 50 minutes spent in Seat 9C on the US Air
shuttle to DC.
- Mike
