<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Weekly report Nov 4th

I spent two days at NSF this week, on an Advisory Panel for Business Operations - talking about how to better organize the NSF MREFC process. Surprisingly it was an interesting discussion - primarily because most of the other folks on the panel were physicists and astronomers and the very different way they have of looking at the world was enlightening.

I suffered the dual horrors of a crashed laptop and a dead cell phone battery which left me twitching from lack of communicative ability. Amazingly, upon my return everything was just fine.

We interviewed the finalists for the Administrative Assistant position in the Director's office last week (the replacement for Violeta Tomsa who deserted us for the US Postal Service a little while ago.) So now there is a new voice on the phone and a new face beside Bev. Please welcome Janine Theurer to Lamont when you see her - she comes to us with a degree in psychology from The University of Arizona, and we are hopeful that this skill will help us better navigate the administrative complexities of this great institution.

Our Development Office has developed a number of new Lamont-centric items to increase our visibility and name recognition - thanks to Ronnie and Pat there is wonderful new display of these in the
cafeteria. With the need to think of many innovative gift ideas for the coming Holidays think of showering your friends and family with lovely Lamont memorabilia.

Enjoy the weekend - it will not be over seventy degrees again for a long while.

-Mike
