<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I returned from a very cloudy Seattle on Tuesday night after a successful trip meeting for the first time one of our newest and most
generous donors, Jerry Paros. More correctly, it was Redmond, not exactly Seattle - the home of Microsoft. I had never been there
before - Microsoft appears to own everything.

On Thursday we hosted a group of local and regional environmental groups for an afternoon of talks and discussion about Lamont and our
plans for the new Geochem building. This was very successful - we received a lot of support and expressions of interest and support.
And thanks to all who helped organize this - it was a big effort.

A grueling 3.5 hour long ExCom this morning.

We had to move everyone out of the Seismology and Marine Biology building this afternoon - as a precautionary measure because of an
acrid smell. Thanks for everyone's patience during this disruption. As soon as I know exactly what caused this I will let everyone know.

One of the great science and engineering leaders of our time, Chuck Vest, (ex-President of MIT) is visiting Columbia next week. He will
be talking in the Low Library 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 31st - his title is "Diversity in Science and Engineering: Personal and
Institutional Journeys, Obligations, and Opportunities". I know him (a very little) from my Woods Hole days - a very impressive fellow -
if you want to go register at:

No travel for me next week - which is very welcome. The sun is shining, it will be over fifty this weekend, so have a good one.

- Mike
