 <>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

After entertaining a bevy of OCE and EAR NSF program managers
                    on
Monday - here to talk with Suzanne and Kerstin and their colleagues
about their fast developing data base projects - I spent Wednesday
                    in
Houston, mostly at BP headquarters, where Sarah Huard and
                    I had
excellent discussions with Lamont Alum and Advisory Board
                    member Leon
Thomsen (a Senior geophysicist there). Meredith Nettles' recent
insights into the nature of a magnitude 5.2 event a few weeks
                    ago in
the Gulf of Mexico (just north of the Sigsbee escarpment)
                    attracted
tremendous interest - it seems it was a massive underwater
                    landslide
that occurred close to billions of dollars worth of drilling
                    platforms.

A Senior Staff meeting this afternoon was a stimulating end
                    to the
 week!

 An important piece of news:

After 13 years as Director of CIESIN, Roberta Balstad has
                    decided to
step down effective May 1st. CIESIN is stronger and more successful
than it has ever been, and Roberta has decided to follow her
                    dream
and relieve herself of administrative responsibilities and
                    focus upon
research. As PI of the Center for Research on Environmental
                    Decisions
(CRED) and co-PI in ADVANCE, she will continue to work with
                    CIESIN
and others on the LDEO campus, but only part-time. So we will
                    still
see her around - it is not really goodbye - but nevertheless,
assuredly it is an excuse for a party.

So, good luck to Roberta, and as I have told her at least
                    twice
 already, I am very jealous.

The sun is shining, the sky is blue - have a great weekend,

 - Mike
