<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I think everyone at Lamont knows that our undergraduate summer intern program is one of our most successful and well-run education programs. It is important to understand that the basis for this success is the leadership that Dallas Abbott has brought to that program for all of the last fifteen years. Yes - this is the fifteenth year that Dallas has run this program for Lamont - and we organized a modest recognition event on Thursday for Dallas at which several of her past protégés spoke and emphasized the impact that Dallas had had on their careers.

I was supposed to be there - to add my thanks to that of all attending, but I was stuck in Halifax Nova Scotia. I was engaged in what I will euphemistically describe as "difficult but productive contract negotiations" with the shipyard that is carrying out the refit of our new research vessel, the Langseth. A one day trip was precipitously converted into a two day trip when, (how shall I say?) "new complexities" arose. However, it seems that Paul Ljunggren and I were able to reach agreement with the shipyard leadership yesterday afternoon, and I was on the 625am flight this morning out of dry sunny beautiful Nova Scotia, to land a couple of hours later in muggy cloudy rainy Newark……..

Langseth is back in the water now - shiny with her new paint - complete with Columbia blue stripe - there are some preliminary photos of the launch at:

I am sure everyone was impacted by the temporary demise of the primary Lamont email server on Wednesday - please remember that status of our computer systems can always be accessed at:

http://www.ldeo.columbia.edu/ldeo/it/announce.htm

And in fact if you are interested in reading a brief overview of the nature of the problem, Bob Bookbinder has posted a brief explanation at this url.

Earlier this afternoon Pat O'Reilly sent out the announcement to everyone on Campus about the new Lamont Shuttle schedule - as you see the service is approximately doubled. This is something we have been working towards for years (literally at least five). But it was Pat's dogged determination that finally made it real. Say thank you to Pat, when next you see him. I hope that this will be a transformational event that will change and improve the Lamont - Morningside interaction..

Have a great weekend,

- Mike
