<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

I am very pleased to announce that Donna Shillington of the
University of Southampton has accepted our offer for a DARS position
in the MG&G Division working on marine seismics. She will be joining
us later in 2007, and along with Suzanne Carbotte's new post doc
Helen Carton will constitute an important expansion in our research
capabilities in both multi channel and ocean bottom seismology.

I finally found time to welcome Jeff Rupert to Lamont - our new
Science Coordinator in the Office of Marine Operations. Jeff brings
many years of experience in commercial seismic boats to our Langseth
operations - operations that we remain committed to begin with shake
down and calibration activities in the Gulf of Mexico in the spring.

A Council of Deans meeting downtown was dominated by discussions of
the University's free speech policies, by continued warnings of the
perils of illegal file sharing and copyright infringement (hardcopy
on both these important issues will be circulated in the coming
weeks), and the announcement that, following approval by the Trustees
in December, the University plans to announce (before the Holidays) a
mortgage assistance program (details unknown at this time). This is
in response to the growing pressure on the University's Manhattan
housing (did you know CU has 7000 apartments?) - pressure that many
of our new hires are experiencing.

The Campus Life Committee survived (I think) a marathon meeting this
morning developing a new approach to the Campus' need to better
control parking - there should be a new draft available for
consideration in the next week or two.

I am not in the office on Monday because this weekend I am going to
sunny Charleston SC to meet my first grandchild. My son and his wife
have had the great wisdom to name her Hudson. Soon I hope to bring
her to my office so she can see her river.

Have a good one,

- Mike
