<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Well, suddenly it is a new year. And I have been grateful for a few
quiet days at work this week to recover from the mad schedule of the
holidays - too many trips to airports ferrying various offspring and
their appendages to and from diverse destinations. But now all is
quiet again. And we can worry about what, if anything, the new
Congress is going to do about funding the federal agencies or whether
they are going to leave us all in limbo, supported via a continuing
resolution, through the rest of the fiscal year.

We had some excellent press coverage over the Holidays - the Boston
Globe did a good piece on Maya Tolstoy's paper in Science on the East
Pacific Rise eruption; and the NYT Sunday Magazine featured Marie
Tharp - a very well researched article along with a 6 minute video
(starring Bill Ryan) on their website.

2007 is going to be a great year for the Observatory - opening a new
building, bringing our new ship online - I hope also that it is a
very happy one for us all. I think it was Ed Cook that told me that
the country of Bhutan actually has 'happiness' as one its objectives
written into the constitution - a fine goal that the US could do well
to emulate, but I am not holding my breath.
