<>LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

A string of highly unrelated brief reports:

As previously announced Rich Seager is this year's recipient of the
Director's award for Excellence in Research. He will be honored at a
brief event at 3pm next Friday - September 7th in the Monell
Auditorium - after which he will present a talk on his most recent
research work. All are invited.

I attended briefly the orientation session for our excellent crop
of incoming students on Wednesday - around 46 I think - Climate and
Society, Journalism and DEES PhD (and only 18 were male) - a great
addition to the intellectual atmosphere of our campus.

My search for the new Associate Director for the BPE Division is
ongoing - I have not yet been able to talk to all the folks I need to
consult. So for the next couple of weeks I will take on the role
myself (with John Marra's sad departure this weekend - GOOD LUCK
again, John). I will not rush the decision, and want to make sure
that I have considered carefully all options and possibilities.

Our own Chris Small is up for re-election to the University Senate.
If you think it would be valuable to the Observatory to have Chris re-
elected (which I certainly do!), then Officers of Research should go
to the following web site to vote:

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/senate/information/voteresrch07.htm

We are discovering that many folks do not know about some of the new
benefits that are being introduced by CU. So we are introducing a new
feature to my weekly reports - at the end of each month I will
include a brief "Did you know that?" feature that will briefly
describe one of the new and potentially useful benefits.

Did you know that Columbia now provides 100 hours per year of
subsidized "back-up care" to all officers and graduate students? The
service is designed to support you during a temporary change in
normal care arrangements or when you have an unexpected need to
provide care for others. The service is also provided anywhere in the
country (i.e., childcare during AGU!). To register, visit
www.workoptionsgroup.com, or call 1-800-557-0847.

Have a great Labor Day weekend.

Mike
