...Observatory.
The CPC01 notes that a group has been charged with solving this problem, and thus will say no more about it.

According to some, this is analogous to having two telephone handsets on your your desk; one for calling long distance, and one for local calls.

Applications which essentially allow one operating system to run on top of another are one solution to the two desktop dichotomy. For example, such applications allow any MS windows operating system to be run fully and simultaneously within a unix/linux kernel, e.g., http://www.vmware.com. Dual (in-line) OS capabilities also exist for Macintosh operating systems, e.g. http://www.suse.com/en/products/suse_linux/ppc/.

While details remain to be worked out, the CPC01 feels that only a selected subset of operating systems and applications should be supported on the network. At the present time, support might be restricted to: Mac OS 9 or 10 (not 7 or 8), Linux Redhat 7 (not Debian or SuSE or Caldera), Windows ME or XP (not 95), Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop (not Corel or Canvas or Quark), for example. The list of supported operating systems and applications could be reviewed and updated yearly by the Standing Committee (Rec. 1).

Improvements which are already underway, such as gigabit network backbone connecting all buildings on campus, are not widely known or appreciated.

At the time of writing, an oversight committee is being formed to work with external affairs at the CEI to revamp the Lamont web pages.

Lamont is currently investing in this effort through the LIF, and other internal funding mechanisms. Indications are that the NSF Ocean Sciences Division, for example, is prepared to invest in the community's MG&G data base needs.
