LDEO Dialup Network
System Details
A new ISDN-PRI (full digital) modem pool has been installed. It consists of 23
digital modems connected to the LDEO phone switch via a ISDN-PRI T1 line. The
LDEO switch is in turn connected to the central office via ISDN-PRI links over
fiber optic cable.
This means these modems have the most up-to-date state-of-the-art connection
to the telephone network possible and will be able to accept ISDN-BRI (in home
ISDN connections 2 X 64K) or 56K analog modem connections. At the moment, the
software is configured for the Kflex 56K standard and we are waiting for an
upgrade to the new V90 standard. This means your new V90 modem or Sportster
X2 modem will currently only connect at V34 (28,800). Please be aware that when
we upgrade to V90 the ability to actually make a connection at the faster speeds
depends on several external factors which include the quality for you "local
loop" copper, the distance from the central office and the number of A-to-D
conversions between your end and the Orangetown central office.
Anyone with an existing PPP or ARA account may use the new modem pool and
anyone wishing an account just needs to send e-mail to request. As always you
may dial into the modem pool with a 'dumb' terminal connection and telnet to
a host of your choice with just your regular network account and password.
