Configuring Eudora for Authenticated SMTP: Windows

These instructions refer to Eudora version 5.1 running on Windows. More recent versions should be similar. They pertain ONLY to people using lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu for outgoing mail. If you are using an SMTP (outgoing mail) server provided by a non-Lamont ISP, you do not need to make these changes.

Although these instructions deal with sending mail you should know the following:

The IMAP implementation in Eudora is brain-damaged. IMAP looks at every directory in your home directory as a mail file -- Eudora has no way of unsubscribing from the files that do not contain mail. Also, you may get errors when performing several operations in a row that change the sequence numbers of messages in your mailbox. Most mail clients take care of this automatically, waiting so you don't need to think about this. In Eudora, you must watch for operations to complete before starting new ones.

You must use the same "login name" for both sending and receiving mail if you want to use authenticated SMTP. If your incoming mail server is anything aside from lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu or lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu, authenticated SMTP will not work.

If you are using Norton AntiVirus 2002 and are configured to check outgoing mail, you will need to disable this feature. Here are the instructions

  1. Start Eudora and select Tools, Options and Getting Started.

  2. Look at SMTP Server. If it has lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu, change it to lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu.
If you are using a non-Lamont ISP's SMTP (outgoing mail) server, STOP NOW. These instructions pertain ONLY to people who have been using lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu.

  3. Check Allow authentication.

  4. Select Incoming Mail. Check the value of Server configuration--either IMAP or POP.

  5. Now select Checking Mail. If your mail server is set to lamont.ldeo.columbia.edu and the Server configuration value was set to IMAP, then ensure Required, STARTTLS is selected from the Secure Sockets when Receiving item list. If you have set your server configuration to use POP, then choose Never, instead.

  6. Select Sending Mail. Ensure Required, STARTTLS is selected from the Secure Sockets when Sending item list and click OK.

  7. Install the Lamont Certificate by following the instructions in the next section.

Installing Lamont's Certificate and Using Authenticated SMTP

Before you can use Authenticated SMTP to send email, the security Certificate for Columbia University should be installed in Eudora.

  1. Create a test email and send it. If you already have Lamont's Certificate installed in Eudora, the message will be sent after you have authenticated. If you don't have the Certificate installed, you will see an error message similiar to this:

  2. To add the Certificate, click the Personalities tab in your Account display window.

  3. Right click on your Personality and select Properties

  4. Click on Last SSL Info to start the Certificate Information Manager

  5. Click on Certificate Information Manager button to locate the Columbia Unviersity Certificate

  6. Highlight the Lamont Certificate from the list under Server Certificates and click on Add to Trusted. Click Done to exit the Certificate Information Manager.
