Abstract:

While the sonification step in Lohmann's [1995] shell weight paleocarbonate proxy method is necessary for the removal of detritus contained in the chambers of foraminifera shells, it has a drawback in that it preferentially induces the breakup of thin-walled shells and hence biases shell weight measurements toward the thick-walled end of the spectrum. This bias is particularly large for samples which have been weakened by dissolution.
