Abstract:

The salt-finger susceptibilities of pycnoclines throughout the South Atlantic are examined by fitting curves of constant density ratios (R-rho) to average NODC theta-S data in 10-degrees x 10-degrees squares. The results show that the southwestern Atlantic has pycnocline density ratios less than 2.0, indicating that this region of the South Atlantic has the highest potential for salt-finger activity.
