Abstract: 

In this volume of Deep-Sea Research II are summarized the major results from several years of effort on the ECO systeme du canyon du cap-FERret (ECOFER) experiment, for which this paper serves as a brief introduction. In it we review the organizational framework, the objectives, the field experiment strategy, and the organization of this volume.
