Antarctica sediment provenance and glacial history

Sediments deposited along the Antarctic perimeter represent diverse sources that were mixed during glacial transport. To document integrated provenance signals from different regions of Antarctica, we have analyzed the 40Ar/39Ar ages of detrital hornblende and biotite grains and the U-Pb ages of detrital zircons from terrigenous sediments from cores taken near the perimeter of Antarctica (Elizabeth Pierce, 2012, Ph.D dissertation; Pierce et al., submitted to Earth Science Reviews). The figure shows the detrital hornblende results, with age ranges indicated by colors and proportions of each range shown in the pie charts.
