* Nuclear Tests
We shall use the distinction between a nuclear test and a nuclear explosion that was adopted in the revised protocol of 1990 for the Threshold Test Ban Treaty. Thus, a single underground nuclear test (UNT) can consist of a number of different underground nuclear explosions (UNEs) provided these are carried out within a time interval not exceeding 0.1 s and within an area delineated by a circle whose diameter is less than 2 km. Explosions with a time interval longer than 0.1 s, or a distance greater than 2 km, are counted as separate tests. We note that this distinction between UNTs and UNEs has been followed in official Russian documentation of the Soviet test program at STS, but with one exception, namely the nuclear test which was conducted at Degelen in a tunnel on January 30, 1974.
