2 layers of socks (1 thick, 1 thin. Not cotton)
band aids/moleskin/second skin for blisters

water bottles (that can carry 4 liters of water, total)
day pack
any pertinent field guides
field notebook
pocket knife
camera, film
hat
sunscreen
toiletries, medication (including soap, shampoo)
towel
quarters (for showers at Grand Canyon)

Backpackers:
Overnight pack with good suspension
stove, fuel
hiking boots with ankle support
backpacker's sleeping bag, tent (i.e. not Bio2 car camping gear)
