[Journal Entry for July 6, 2012] I park at the Wilson Cove Trailhead, a small parking lot off of the west side of Route 123 in Harpswell, a little north of Lookout Point Road. The trail, blazed in white, heads west through marshy pine woods, crossing a firebreak and a little steam, and terminating atop a sea cliff by the cove. The ground vegetation is particularly lush, with many ferns, blueberry bushes and smaller plants. The sea cliff is quite high, twenty feet or more, so I follow an unblazed footpath north to where I can descend to the beach, following a small stream. I pass a rock ledge, part of the sea cliff, with fairly well-preserved glacial scratches. The shore is very muddy, and I almost lose my shoes trying to walk across it. The view out into Middle Bay towards Birch Island is very nice. The sea cliff is undercut in places, making a shallow sea cave. I walk out onto a seaweed covered ledge, passing a horseshoe crab shell. Sea gulls are plentiful, but I see no wading birds. After a few minutes, I retrace my path back to my car. About forty minutes.
