Springwater Fieldtrip D17

June 29-July 8, 2017

Participants: Dallas Abbott and William Menke

June 29, 2017.  Left LDEO late in the afternoon and stayed the night at the Best Western on Elm Street in Concord Massachusetts.

June 30, 2017. Breakfast at the Best Western.

Spring 1, Site 19, a very low flow rate spring by the side of Route 10 in Swanze New Hampshire, by the Yale Woods, near an enclosed concrete cistern.

Spring 2, Site 20, a historic mineral spring at 296 Mountain Road (Route 124), Jaffrey New Hampshire, shown us by the owner, Ann Royce, and local historian Robert Stevenson.

Perkins Pond, on Jaffrey Road (Rt. 124) south of Marlborough New Hampshire. The view across the pond towards Mt Monadnock is spectacular.

Spring 3, Site 21, the Gilsum Badger Spring, 10 Spring St, Gilsum New Hampshire, above the Ashuelot River.

Spring 4, Site 22, Harrisville Town Spring, along Skatutakee Rd. about halfway down the length of the lakeshore.

Spring 5, Site 23, Lowell Wright Spring, along the Second New Hampshire Turnpike , New Boston, NH.

Spring 6, Site 24, River Road Spring, below granite blocks below the roadway, 167 River Road, New Boston, NH.

Spring 7, Site 25, Exeter Spring, by a concrete spring house along Oak Tree Extension, a suburban street in Exeter New Hampshire.

We stayed the night at the Days Inn, Main Street, Dover New Hampshire.

July 1, 2017. Breakfast of the Days Inn

Spring 8, Site 27, by the First Bridge along River Road, North Conway New Hampshire.  It turned out to be a public faucet connected to the town’s water supply (or at least, so we think).

Chocorua Lake Conservancy, to view Mt. Chocorua from the bridge at the Narrows.

Spring 9, Site 26, Pinkham Notch Spring, along Route 16 about a quarter miles south of the Visitors Center.

Spring 10, Site 28, Conway Mineral Spring, in an ornate wooden spring house behind the High School at at 599 Eagle Way, Conway New Hampshire.

Arrived Harpswell Maine around 6PM.  The rest of the fieldtrip consists of a few stops made during the week of July 2.

July 6, 2017.

Spring 11, Site 29, Poland Spring, at “The Source” Spring House in Preservation Park.  The Spring House provides no access to the spring.  After some searching, we found the outflow from a white PVC pipe, on the slope beneath the northwest corner of the Convention Center parking lot.

July 8, 2017.

Spring 12, Site 1, Stovers Cove Spring, Harpswell, Maine, a white PVC pipe flowing into a cistern, by the side of the road just uphill of the boat launch.

Spring 13, Site 30, Nightshade Spring, 129 Moulton Hill Road, Parsonsville Maine. The spring is on the uphill side near a sharp turn, with parking on the opposite side of the road. The Delorme Road Atlas for Maine shows many streams in the area that are straight and which have right-angle offsets, which we take as indicative of structural control and perhaps faulting.

Park Haven Lake, on Maplewood Road, west of Newfield Maine.  The view across the north arm of the lake to the northwest, towards low mountains in this distance, is very nice.  A Great Blue Heron flew by.

Spring 14, Site 31, Bond Mountain Spring, near 174 Bond Mountain Road (Rt. 11) in West Newfield Maine. The spring is on the west side (high side) of the road at a pullout.

We returned to Tappan New York about 8:30 PM.
