During his post-doctoral research at Florida State University, Thurnherr created a high quality WOCE-era climatology of the South Atlantic.
While living in Florida, Thurnherr took some pictures of "wind rows" (Langmuir streaks) in Ochlockonee bay. While these pictures were taken with a really bad digital camera, better ones are apparently hard to find, as these have been used in two different oceanography "coffee table" books.
Before switching to oceanography, Thurnherr was working in IT. One of his interest was (and is) scientific visualization and computer animations. In 1993 while working for the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre Thurnherr created a short computer animation called Summer 93. In the oceanographic context, Thurnherr has also created animations from current-meter, float, and from numerical-model data.
