Lamont Instrument Lab

The Instrumental Lab houses the machine shop facility for Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. It was set up to serve the scientific community in developing new instrumentation, modifying existing and maintaining equipment in use. We have the equipment and experienced personnel to handle most everything from precision machinework to the fabricating of steel and aluminum.

Our facility consists of the following:

Our welding shop has the equipment for doing carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum. We can also flame cut steel up to 2'' thick.

We also have a section in the shop that has been designated a staging area. Scientists can use this area to organize and set up their equipment before going into the field or out to sea. An overhead crane facilitates the movement of heavy equipment in this area.

This is a cost recovery facility and at the present time (January 2004) our fee is $60.00 per hour which includes a $5.00 per hour tooling charge.
