Description:
How does the convergent algorithm work in Basemap Plus?
Solution:
Convergent gridding is the best all-purpose algorithm. It is a process where grid node values are converged upon by iteratively mapping control points to nearby grid nodes. It starts with a coarse initial grid and with each iteration, it halves the grid spacing until it arrives at the final grid. Its advantages are a stable trend like extrapolation, it is faster than least squares for larger datasets, and it works well when patching new data into an existing grid. Its disadvantage is that it contours inside fault boundaries.
