How do I receive an area readout in square meters using the planimeter?

Description:
I have traced an area using the planimeter in Basemap > Mode, but it is only
showing a readout for length and the units toggle for area is grayed out.  How
do I receive an area readout in square meters using the planimeter?        

Solution:
The area readout is not working because the area you have defined was probably
not closed.  This means that after defining the area with MB1, you must select
MB3 > Close.  Once Basemap "knows" the area is closed, it will display a readout
in the Area portion of the Planimeter menu.  Also, the units toggle is now
available for selection.  The various units for length include: Feet, Miles,
Meters, and Kilometers.  The units for area include:  Square feet, Square miles,
Acres, Hectacres, Square meters, and Square kilometers.
