We are happy to announce that this summer we will be mentoring a student as part of the Google Summer of Code (GSoC) program. The project will proceed in collaboration with my colleagues Julien Emile-Geay and Kevin Anchukaitis, and in partnership with the Climate Code Foundation. The focus of the project will be to establish the software infrastructure for the Common Climate Project (CCP), which will seek to make climate reconstruction code and data available in an open source environment and progress along three major themes: (1) accelerate and facilitate scientific collaboration on climate reconstruction methodologies; (2) invite formal and informal participation of experts from all fields (particularly statistics, computer science, and applied mathematics) as well as interested members of the general public; and (3) harness the power of crowd sourcing and cloud computing to productively engage tech-savvy citizens into solving climate change problems. While these goals are far loftier than what can be accomplished in a summer, we are very excited that Hannah Aizenman, a graduate student in computer science at the City College of New York, will be getting things off the ground as our GSoC student developer. Her focus will be setting up the general computing framework for the CCP, with a focus on data visualization. Hannah’s full project description is here. The Climate Code Foundation is also hosting a blog that will provide updates on Hannah’s project throughout the summer, as well as news on the two other GSoC projects (here and here) that are being hosted through the Foundation. We look forward to the results from all three student developers!
Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects.
