- 1986-present, Consulting Editor, McGraw-Hill's Architectural Record.
Monthly column on computer graphics and office management software.
- 1989-present, Editor-in-chief, How to MAXIMIZE Your PC, an encyclopedic
reference work, updated every 10 weeks.
- 1984-1986, President, Classroom Consortia Media (CCM). Took company,
a developer of educational software and computer graphics, from $300,000
annual sales to $1.1 million while cutting G&A from $940,000 to $270,000;
CCM's first profitable year.
- 1983-1990, Consultant, Walnut Capital (a Small Business Investment
Company), Windy City Capital, Sears venture capital funds.
- 1981, Editor in Chief, DirectMagazine. Responsible for startup of this
new consumer bimonthly for people who buy products by mail. Hired full
editorial staff; created initial budget; helped shape business plan for
investor offering. Left to work for McNamee Consulting (original busi ness
adviser to Direct) and to write, when the magazine was taken over by Diversion
Publishing.
- 1981-present, Associate, McNamee Consulting Company, a firm specializing
in publishing ventures. Clients have included U.S. News & World Report,
Business Week, Consumers Union, Conde Nast, American Express, Time-Warner.
- 1980-1981, Senior Editor for Engineering and Technology, Warren, Gorham
& Lamont. Created new publications (newsletters, books, journals) in
technical-legal areas. Left to run Directwhen WG&L was purchased by
International Thomson.
- 1979-1980, Managing Editor, Boardroom Reports. Served on company's
management committee.
- 1972-1979, MBA Communications. Started as editor of New Engineer; was
vice president and editorial director, with full editorial responsibility
for MBA's four national consumer magazines (MBA, Juris Doctor, Medical
Dimensions, New Engineer) when company ceased operations in 1979.
- 1971-1981, Consultant in quality assurance matters, especially on data
from environmental monitoring equipment. Particularly expert at verifying
pre cision and accuracy of new test systems for particulates in ducts,
and atmospheric ozone monitoring by chemiluminescent spectroscopy.
- 1972, Associate Editor, Chemical Engineeringmagazine. Responsibility
for environmental reportage for the news and engineering staffs of this
McGraw-Hill biweekly.
- 1970-1972, News Editor, McGraw-Hill's Air and Water News. Responsible
for coordinating all coverage for this weekly newsletter. Worked with McGraw-Hill's
national and international bureaus. Stayed at McGraw-Hill w hen this publication
was sold in January 1972.
- 1970, Intern at LIFEmagazine, science and technology section.
- 1965-1970, Staff writer and editor, Sky & Telescopemagazine.
Other Professional Activities
- 1994, 1995: Co-authored Media in Cyberspace surveys with Don Middleberg.
These are the two largest surveys ever conducted of print media use of
on-line services and on-line publishing opportunities.
- 1990: Taught environmental reporting at the University of the West
Indies.
- 1987-1993: Adviser to Shopping for a Better World (first three editions)
at Council on Economic Priorities, Judge for the American Business Press's
highest editorial honor, the Neal Awards
- 1986-1987: Raised funding for and oversaw editing of book-length project,
Reducing the Risk, on toxic waste industry (Island Press, 1987).
- 1979: Helped organize and lead first American multicompany quality-control
study mission ever to tour Japan.
- 1970-present: Numerous speeches and seminars before technical and lay
audiences, colleges and community groups, including New York Academy of
Medicine, Columbia University, Society of Environmental Journ alists, Rutgers
(including keynote speech to engineering graduation, 1987) and Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute, federal government, private companies.
- 1970-present: Professional-quality photographer with home darkroom.
Pictures have appeared in numerous publications, including Brooklyn Museum's
Brooklyn Bridge Centennial book, 1983.
University Activities
- 1991-1992: Editor of newsletter for Columbia's Center for Advanced
Technology.
- 1989 - 1995: Delegate, University Senate, 1989-1995; active member
Budget Review Committee.
Community Service
- 1987-90: Elected to Board of Trustees, Association of New Jersey Environmental
Commissions, 1987.
- 1983-present: Past President New Jersey Environmental Education Fund.
- 1982-1990: Bergen County Transportation Coordinating Committee (Board
