Lab Instructions: Darcy's Law
Instructions
-
Weigh the provided empty tube
-
Fill the provided tube with sand, and way the whole apparatus
-
Attach the inflow tube to the tap and open the tap slowly until some water
flows through the column
-
As soon at the flowrate has stabilized and all air has been flushed out,
measure the discharge rate and the hydraulic head gradient
-
Repeat the experiment 2 more times with two different discharge rates
-
Determine the weight of the saturated column
-
Put the column in vertical position and let the water drain while you are
working on the data analysis
-
Plot discharge rate vs. hydraulic head gradient
-
Weigh the column again at the end of the lab when the drainage stopped
Questions:
What is the hydraulic conductivity of the sand?
What is the porosity and specific yield of the sand?
Compare your results with literature values, do they make sense?
