NOTES - ENVIRONMENTAL DATA ANALYSIS BC 3017 x04
Improvements:
- normalizations of histograms necessary?
- add column of sample type in IC template
- in IC labreport, focus on one particular anion
- in major ion lecture, include the seasonality issue
week1
- Tu 9/7
- Introduction of course, signup, machines check
- Th 9/9
- numbers, units, unit vonversion, back of the envelope
calculations
week 2
- Tu 9/14
- NYC water supply
- experiment setup, sampling strategy
- finish up sea level lab
- Th 9/16
- How does and IC work
- demonstration of instrument calibration
week 3
- Tu 9/21
- IC lab, measurements
- NYC precip., tap waters (2), BRF precip., different seasons,
LI tap water
- split the group in two
- works a lot better if students do not have to prepare the
stds themselves
- do not measure all the old samples
- Th 9/23
- data entry
- hand out copies of all chromatograms and old data
- calibrations
week 4
- Tu 9/28
- science background, major ions (Jim Simpson)
- focus on Fl, Cl, Nitrate, Sulphate
- finish up data analysis
- Th 9/30
- cancelled class because of CA sampling trip, students received
detailed e-mial how to proceed
- lab report writing
- discussion of this particular lab report
week 5
- Tu 10/5
- disucssed lab report and data in general with students
- descriptive statistics, mean, median, histogram
- do we need the normalization of the histograms? Statplus does
it for us.
- Th 10/7
- boxplots lecture, stdev
- excercise histograms, boxplots
week 6
- Tu 10/12
- science background, air pollution, go over using Statplus in
the labs
- Th 10/14
- statistics 2, random variables etc. up to normal distribution
- brief discussion of the central limit theorem
week 7
- Tu 10/19
- Standard error, confidence intervals
- application to IC data
- hand out PM paper
- central limit theorem excercise (=> gave this as homework)
- Th 10/21
week 8
- Tu 10/26
- t-distribution, two experiments, t-tests
- discuss the graphs produced by students on ozone data set
- Th 10/28
- particulate matter (brief), 2 observers,
- exam/homework
- need to fix homework 5 columns and rows, be quantitative in
your answer!
week 9
- Tu 11/2
- Th 11/4
- regression analysis
- multiple regression,time series analysis
- application to ozone data set
- further discussion of ozone data set/lab report
- compare temperatures between stations
- compare O3 concentrations between stations
- look at max values in the day
- try to answer the questions which factors were most important
for O3 formation
- find one other aspect of the data that you find interesting
and discuss the data
week 10
remarks about the second lab report
- refreenceing should be folowing the guidelines
- remove titles of the figures
- abstratc should be a summary
- correlation doesn't mean cause/effect relationship
- students did not do too many statistical tests
- you need to cite the source of your data
- fuzzy topic, have a hard time to chose the appropriate topic.
