Hydrology BC ENV 3025
Geochemical measurements
We will perform measurements on three sets of samples:
- Hudson River water (collected 2/27)
- Pond water from Morningside Park (2/28)
- Altschul tap water (2/29)
Procedure:
- perform measurements on
- original water,
- filtered water after gravel and sand filter,
- filtered water after gravel, sand, and charcoal filter
- filter the water and collect fractions in orange vials
- fill a blue vial up to the 10ml mark with original water. We
will let the water evaporate and look at the residue next week.
- measure
- pH with pH strips (put test strip into water until it does
not change color anymore)
- transfer some water into small glass tube to measure
turbidity on spectrophotometer
- electrical conductivity (put electrode into orange vial,
rinse in DI water between measurements)
- all original waters should be measured for total coliform (as
instructed in class); for the Morningside Park pond water we
will measure total coliform also after each of the two
filtration stages (see above), for Hudson River water only after
the second filtration step
Please transfer results into Google
document
