Budget Justification

During the first year we request 1/1 mo of salary for Gaherty/Webb, who will participate in cruise preparations and the deployment cruise. During the second year we request 1.5/1.0 mo of salary for Gaherty/Webb. Both will participate in cruise preparations and the recovery cruise, and Gaherty will also be beginning the surface wave analysis. Menke will participate at no charge during the first two years. During the third year we request 1.5/1 mo of salary for Gaherty/Webb, and 1 mo of summer salary for Menke, all three of whom will be performing the final stages of the data analysis and results writeup during this period.

We request funds for a graduate research assistant during the second and third years of the project, to assist with the data analysis.

We request 0.5 mo salary each year for an Administrative Assistant, who will assist with making travel/shipping arrangements during for the land fieldwork and cruises, and perform library and electronic database searches to assist the research effort.

Domestic travel consists of funds to support travel and subsistence to meet the ship in Woods Hole, MA, (based on Woods Hole to Bermuda legs) and to attend the fall AGU meeting in San Francisco during the second and third years of the project (when preliminary and final results will be presented, respectively).

Foreign travel consists of funds to support travel and subsistence to disembark from the ship at Bermuda and return to New York. Funds are also requested to present results at the EUG meeting in Nice, France during the last year of the project.

Funds totaling $500 per year are requested for materials and supplies (e.g. computer data tapes) and $2000 is request in the last year of the project for publication preparation and page charges.

In order to support the Lamont-Doherty computer network expense, an assessment of 3% of the Modified Total Direct Cost, not subject to overhead, is requested.

Other costs include communication and shipping (e.g. telephoning collaborators, faxing, etc.), copy center (e.g. photocopying), and tuition remission for the graduate research assistant.
