[Journal entry for August 26, 2010] In the early
morning I drive north along Route 123 on Harpswell
Neck to Lookout Point. The day is clear,
the tide is low and the two small, wooded islands by the boat launch are very
picturesque. I walk across a short spit
of sand that connects the islands to the mainland. They are hogbacks, one up-section from the
other, in a meta-volcanic sequence with steeply dipping strata. The sun, being low in the east, has lit up
the islands of Middle Bay beautifully. I walk around the circumference of each
island, taking care not to slip on the plentiful yellow-green seaweed. I pass several large glacial erratic boulders
and one stretch of rock pavement where the low sun angle has brought out
glacial scratches. In addition to trees,
the islands host many smaller plant species, including goldenrod, raspberry,
blueberry and various grasses. About
one-half hour.
