[Journal Entry for December 26, 2012] I am in Auburn Maine for the holidays. The morning is very clear, a little below freezing and with an inch of snow on the ground. I stroll along the Auburn Riverwalk, on the Auburn side of the Androscoggin River, to view Great Falls. Unfortunately, little water is falling today. I have to look hard to see a few rivulets of water cascading down the rocks of the falls. I suppose that most of the water is being diverted through the power house, on the Lewiston side of the falls. The rocks of the falls are mostly black in color, but a tan layer which I take to be a erosion-resistant granite caps them and creates the falls. I take the River Walk downriver, passing below the Governor James B. Longley Memorial Bridge, and descending down to river level. Much of the vegetation growing along the river band has balls of clear ice clinging to it, and these balls are topped with white snow, creating an pretty bell-like effect. I stand on the river band, watching floes of ice rotate as they are caught by eddies. A solitary Mallard Duck is sleeping in the shallows. About a half hour.
