[December
30, 2012; Cold Spring, NY] I met my
friends Ron Kleiman and Lee Reiser
at Foundry Dock Park, by the train station in Cold Spring New York and had
lunch with them at the Depot restaurant.
They had spent the morning kayaking in Constitution Marsh, just south of
the town of Cold Spring. The day was
sunny but very windy; the Hudson River was rather choppy. While Lee and Ron packed up, I walked around
the little riverfront park. It commands
an excellent view of Crow’s Nest Mountain and Storm King Mountain on the east
side of the river. Storm King, with its
domed shape and precipitous cliffs, is particularly imposing. I could also see Foundry Cove, looking south
from the park. After lunch, I walked east of Main Street, crossing the railroad
tracks via a pedestrian tunnel, to another small park along the river
bank. This one has a large gazebo, built
on a rectangle of land that juts out into the Hudson. The view of Storm King is even better than at
Foundry Dock Park. Looking northeast, I
could also make out the flank of Bull Hill, on this side of the river. I stopped twice on the drive back home, once
to admire Castle Hill, a large mansion on a hill above the highway, and then
again at Bear Mountain, to view the Hudson River from the bridge’s pedestrian
walkway. The view northward is spectacular!
The conical hill, called Sugarloaf, is particularly beautiful. About a half hour.
