[November 29, 2015; Deep Hollow]  In the mid-afternoon, Dallas and I parked at the boat launch on East Village Road in Tudedo NY and took the Tuxedo – Mount Ivy Trail (TMI, blazed in red) to Deep Hollow.  This is the ‘Deep Hollow’ near Tuxedo, which is different from the one that’s just west of Long Mountain, in the northern part of the Park. We crossed the Ramapo River by the bridge on the road, crossed the NYS Thruway by an underpass and joined TMI at the trailhead on Grove Drive.  The trail ascends steeply into the hills, over fairly rocky ground. We joined the Triangle Trail (blazed in yellow) and took it north, to the point where it crosses the stream in Deep Hollow.  The Hollow is a long a narrow valley, full of tallish trees.  The little stream is very picturesque, with many pools and several small waterfalls.  We explored the Hollow for a few minutes and then took a woods road that followed a tributary stream eastward, past several more beautiful waterfalls, until it connected with TMI on Black Ash Mountain.  We bushwhacked up one of the pits of the Black Ash Mine, climbed the tailings pile, and gazed down into a neat square hole carved into the rock.  I suppose that it was a mine shaft of some sort, but its bottom was now covered with murky water that did not give any sense of its depth.  The hill – Black Ash Mountain, I suppose - above the mine is very interesting, with a broad rocky summit and many huge angular blocks, some as large as cars, littering its slopes.  I presume that they are glacially-plucked boulders and are relicts of the Ice Age.  We continued on TMI, stopping at several ledges with good views westward across the Ramapo Valley.  The sun, which was getting pretty low in the sky, was lighting the rocks and grasses at these viewpoints a dull orange.  We were reminded by the view that we were still high up in the hills.  Fortunately, the trail is all downhill from that point and we were soon back at our car. 2:45.
