Dear Wonderful Friends, Colleagues and Students,
I am rarely overwhelmed but I must have been to have drawn a blank on what I
have been thinking about for weeks and had wanted to say.
So here is the rest of what I wanted to say and I am sorry I didn't get it out
in person. Maybe this is better than standing around listening to this!
First, a department is not as successful as DEES without people like Monica and
Yasmin who do so much to make it a welcoming place
for anyone who comes into the office. They are cheerful and fun and do a
lot of work to make things run smoothly- especially at exams and admissions
time! I thank them so very much for all they did to help with the party
today and all they do everyday. Along with Sally,
they are a great team.
Robbi Simpson and I have know
each other for over 40 years. She keeps Schermerhorn,
classrooms and lab and teaching/lab supplies so that teaching runs smoothly
there. She has many talents besides her knowledge of rocks and minerals,
which is impressive. We shared some really fun memories today. She loves DEES
as I do.
Second, I wanted to say that of the many wonderful things that have come from
my time at Columbia top is meeting my husband, Greg Mountain, when he was a
graduate student. I first spotted him on the second floor of Schermerhorn near the elevator. More than forty years later
we agree it seems like yesterday. As everyone in the business knows,
there are challenges to life in research but our shared passion for the earth
sciences is a great bond. We have two grown sons. One of whom was able to
be at the party today. I was thrilled.
Third, A couple of standout experiences were my
opportunities on research cruises. And I got to sit at a table with someone who
had recently walked on the moon.
I want to thank all of the division administrators for their help in setting up
for incoming students and working with DEES to sort out funding issues, etc.
Thank you to everyone in the Butler Bldg who also work with DEES on many things
and see to so many complicated problems.
And to the Director's Office and the Development Office for
being great partners in a lot of things.
I wanted to thank the Lamont IT people - Mahdad, Rob,
Phil, Jonathan and Golam for their infinite patience
and dedication to helping everyone. Lamont is incredibly lucky to have them.
I want to thank the Facilities/Buildings and Grounds and Shipping people. It is
hard to list all of the things they have done for DEES and Lamont. We are lucky
to have them too.
Thank you to everyone in the cafeteria who are like
family to each of us. Another group of wonderful, fun and caring people the Lamont is lucky to have.
Finally, students are what we are all about. I wish them all success and
excitement in their studies and research.
I apologize if I forgot to acknowledge anyone.
Thank you all for coming to the BBQ and for the thoughtful gifts and cards.
Hope you had a good time.
Have a great weekend!!
Carol
