Itinerary

Springwater Fieldtrip Q

Dallas Abbott and Bill Menke, December 19, 2018

10 AM, Leave Tappan New York

12 Noon, Buy lunch and gasoline at the Stewart’s Shop, intersection of Route 9W and Route 385, Coxsackie, New York.

12:15 PM, Arrive Vosburgh Swamp Wildlife Management Area, off of Four Mile Point Road, Coxsackie New York and park in a lot with a hiker’s kiosk.

12:20 PM, Hike a loop through the park, first crossing the railroad right-of-way to the southwest of the entrance and bushwhacking up to the headwaters of the stream that flows, via a tunnel, through the berm.  We found some springs but their temperatures were just above freezing, indicating a very shallow source.  We stopped to view streams, wetlands and a small pond.

1:30 PM, Spring 1 (Site 108), about halfway between the pond and the Hudson River, just south of an east-west footpath.

2:00 PM, Cross Four Mile Point Road and view the Hudson River.

2:10 PM, Walk Four Mile Point Road back to the car, stopping to view a small pond with a Muskrat lodge in the Four Mile Point Preserve, located between four Mile Point Road and the Hudson River, just south of a turn in the road.

2:00 PM, Stop at a hayfield along Route 385 in Athens New York to view the Hudson River from this ridge-top vantage.

2:15 PM, Stop at Athens Riverfront Park, Athens New York, to view the Hudson River.

2:30 PM, Drive Route 9W south as far as the Wyndam-Saugerties Thruway entrance, to view the terrain.

4:30 PM, Arrive Tappan New York.
