November 20-22, 2025. Memphis, Tennessee Trip. I gave the Friday Colloquium at the Center
for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis (Memphis,
Tennessee). My colleague Vadim Levin
picked me up at the airport on the evening of November 20. Then, he and his wife Julia Levin took me on
a walk through Tom Lee Park. It park is
on a narrow strip of land between the city buildings and the eastern bank of the
Mississippi River. We arrived at the dusk of a cloudy day. A thin line of bright sky made the western
horizon glow. Two bridges were in sight,
the trussed arch of the Interstate 40 bridge to our north and the Harahan Iron
Bridge (a cantilevered railroad bridge) to our south. Both were decorated with colorful
lights. We walked as far as the Tom Lee
Monument, a bronze sculpture that depicts Mr. Lee rescuing victims of a boating
accident from the water. We then headed
back the way we came. 0:30.
Afterwards, we had dinner (me
catfish) at the Soul Fish Café (4720 Poplar Ave, Memphis). Later on my visit,
we had dinner (me ribs and pulled pork) at Corky’s
Ribs and BBQ (5259 Poplar Ave, Memphis).
