[Mt. St. Helens trip]. In late August 1983, while I was an Assistant Professor at Oregon State University, Dr. Tom Hanks of the US Geological Survey invited me to accompany him on a routine monitoring flight of Mt. St. Helens (Washington State). I drove up to the Vancouver, Wa. area, where I met up with Tom. He and I boarded a small plane and flew over to and around the volcano. Later that day, we visited the Cascades Volcano Observatory and met with some of the scientists there.
The big explosion of Mt. St. Helens was on May 18, 1980, so my visit was about three years and three months afterward.
I have no notes from the trip. On March 31, 2010, I came across a photo-shop envelope in my office desk at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory containing both negatives and 3x5 prints of the photos that I took that day. The envelope is dated 08/25/1983, so I presume that my trip to Mt. St. Helens was a few days earlier. I scanned both the negatives and the prints. I converted some of the images to black and white, for the color quality is not very good.
