NSF Summer Program in Geology, Syracuse University, Summer 1971. I have no journal for this program. In Summer 1971, while I was an entering senior at East Rockaway High School (East Rockaway, NY), I participated in a 6-week long NSF Summer Program in Geology. My friend and classmate, Victor Baltera, also attended. The program was directed by Professor Bryce Hand of Syracuse University (Syracuse NY). We stayed in a dorm at the university and had classes in Lyman Hall, the building where the geology department was located. One of the most attractive elements of the program was the large number of fieldtrips, often several per week. We visited many natural areas in central New York, where we examine sedimentary rocks, fossils and glacial features. We also took weekend tours to Niagara Falls and the Thousand Islands region.
The program had a huge impact on me. I had been interested in the Earth Sciences before, but it convinced me that my career should be in that direction.
In spring 2010, I found several trays of slides that I took while in high school and college in a closet in my mother's house in East Rockaway. I took them with a Kowa single-lense reflex camera given to me by my father. Among them were two 100-slide trays from this program. The first tray had captions, which I have kept, with only a little editing, here. I had to write new captions for the second 100.
I (Bill Menke) scanned the slides and created this album in October, 2010.
