Site 1 was selected to maximize stratigraphic coverage in an accessible coring location and in an area minimizing disturbance. Chinde point fit these criteria. The
site is located in an old quarry developed in Neogene Bidahochi
Formation lavas in the north end of the park, not far from the Painted
DesertVisitor Center.
Site 2 was selected towards the end of coring site 1 to complement the coverage of the first site. Although the core covers only the
lower two-third of the section recovered at Chinde Point it is
invaulable because it is adjacent to the most data-rich parts of the
Park sequence. It will permit clear calibration of the fideleity and
completness of the Chinle and Moenkopi sections.
