The superb outcrops around Warner Valley, near St. George
will be the site of a half day field trip for interested participants
on the
afternoon of the 15th of November. Warner Valley is a site of some of
the most spectacular
outcrops of early Mesozoic strata which we will can see in the region.
Our field trip will be led by Andrew Milner, Jim Kirkland, and Sarah
Spears.
Extensive outcrops of the “silty facies” of the Kayenta Formation in Warner Valley.
Enormous Warner Valley outcrops. Red arrow indicates the approximate
contact Dinosaur Canyon and Whitmore Point members of the Moenave
Formation. Yellow arrow points to the estimated position of contact
between the top of the Moenave and the base of the Springdale
Sandstone, Kayenta Formation (although not easily visible in this
picture). The blue arrow shows the distinct contact between the
“silty facies” and the “transition zone” of the
Kayenta Formation.
