Field Trip to Warner Valley: November 15

The superb outcrops around Warner Valley, near St. George will be the site of a half day field trip for interested participants on the afternoon of the 15th of November. Warner Valley is a site of some of the most spectacular  outcrops of early Mesozoic strata which we will can see in the region. Our field trip will be led by Andrew Milner, Jim Kirkland, and Sarah Spears.



Kayenta Formation, Warner Valley

Extensive outcrops of the “silty facies” of the Kayenta  Formation in Warner Valley.

Lower to Middle Glen Canyon Group, Warner Valley


Enormous Warner Valley outcrops. Red arrow indicates the approximate contact Dinosaur Canyon and Whitmore Point members of the Moenave Formation. Yellow arrow points to the estimated position of contact between the top of the Moenave and the base of the Springdale Sandstone, Kayenta Formation (although not easily visible in this picture). The blue arrow shows the distinct contact between the “silty facies” and the “transition zone” of the Kayenta Formation.
