Background Material for ICDP Workshop -- PAGES Workshops Summary
RATIONAL 1) Need for drilling of long records from large lakes to recover records of long-term climate change and evolution of major lacustrine basins 2) Need to have large geographic coverage of climate records in lakes especially for last couple glacial/interglacial cycles 3) Need for high-resolution records for Holocene 4) These needs require coordination, especially given practical limits of ICDP 5) Therefore, specific, identifiable, roles for ICDP and specifically scientific drilling need to be developed within larger science plans. GOALS 1) Identification of major scientific problems 2) Development of long range (5 yr) plans 3) Identification of specific roles for ICDP 4) Identification of specific equipment needs 5) Report outlining above MEETING PLAN Day 1 1) Introduction of ICDP 2) Relationship to other funding groups (NSF, etc.) 3) Major science questions and engineering considerations 4) Identification of sub-groups of participants Day 2 1) Meetings of sub-groups 2) Presentation of sub groups and discussions Day 3 1) Engineering considerations 2) Writing up of reports of subgroups 3) Discussion of report
