Lamont scientist Kim Kastens chaired the DLESE Collections Comittee from 1999-2003. This is an archive of documents from Suzanne Larsen of the University of Colorado chaired the Collections Committee from 2003-2005. The Committee was disbanded in the summer of 2005.
The Collections Committee of the Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) concerns itself with the resources in the DLESE Collection, including:
- What shall be the scope and emphasis of the collection?
- What "collections policy" shall guide the growth of the library?
- By what mechanism shall items be selected for the "reviewed collection"?
- How can we harness the power of the web and the strength of numbers in the DLESE community to ensure that the materials in the collection are of highest possible quality?
- How can we ensure that the collection meets the needs of teachers and learners in hard-to-teach situations (e.g. urban students with limited access to Nature, place-bound students, visually-impaired students, minorities traditionally underrepresented in science and math)?
- As the collection grows, how will we assess whether it is growing in a balanced manner or lopsided manner, with respect to discipline, level, type of resource, etc.?
- How can we encourage contributions to the library by rewarding resource creators with appropriate academic career recognition?
