<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The sun is shining, so all is well at last ... even though it is budget season at CU so the week has been characterized by the review of one too many spread sheets - preparing for next week's meeting with Provost Brinkley.

At last I can report to you publicly on the outcome of our post doc fellowship competition. We will be admitting three in the fall, and all three are absolutely superb individuals, chosen with great difficulty from a large pool of admissible candidates. Again thanks are due to Sydney Hemming and her committee for the difficult decision-making. The three are:
– Ben Holtzman, from Caltech who will be working with Peter Kelemen and Marc Spiegelman;
– Richard Cullather from the University of Boulder who will be working with Yochanan Kushnir; and
– Agnes Helmstetter whose mentor will be Art Lerner Lam.

I need to correct, or at least add to, some information in my last week's report. The effort to bring our warehouse back into a functional state is being led by Paul Ljunggren and Dale Chayes - Paul will need all the help he can get with this very difficult task - you will receiving a number of messages on this topic over the next weeks - please be helpful and responsive. It is in all our interests to facilitate the renovation of this facility.

To those who have read the most recent issue of Nature and seen my earth shattering quote: ("It is unthinkable that we would engage in activities damaging to the global environment" - did I really say that?) in the article about our research vessel EWING, please be aware that there are many statements in this article that are at best profoundly misleading, or at worst just plain wrong. Rather sad, really.

Two small things:

The public release of the US commission on ocean policy (led by Admiral Watkins) will occur (finally) on April 20th.

The US National research effort to build an ocean observatory system (called ORION) is going to start publishing a hard copy newsletter - if you would like to be on the mailing list send your name to Violeta in my office (vtomsa@ldeo) and we will do a block submission of names.

Enjoy the sunshine, and I hope to see many of at the CU 250 climate Symposium next Thursday and Friday in Lerner Hall - if nothing else you will get to see lots of photographs of Wally wearing a tie.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
