<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Because I spent two days in Washington this week, (or more accurately, lovely Crystal City - in a Sheraton, no less) so Friday seems to have arrived more quickly than usual. This particular sojourn in more southern climes was motivated by our need to keep involved with the deliberations of the Marine Mammal Commission as they consider possible impacts on marine life from sources of anthropogenic sound.

Please try to keep at least sometime open on May 13th and 14th - we will be holding a series of five 'workshops' to discuss the current draft of the Lamont strategic plan. The five 2-3 hour sessions will be focused in turn upon the five 'science' sections of the plan - Climate, Solid Earth, Earth's Surface, Biogeosciences and Education. Drafts of the text for each of these sections will be made available next week - attendance will be open to all - and the goal will be to receive input on how we can improve, identify gaps, correct errors, change emphases - as is required. But we want to come out of these meetings with clear direction on how to reach a final version of the text within a week or two. Ellen Kappel of Geo Prose Inc. will attend to help with the actual writing.

Before you all send me email asking 'What is the function of the plan?' followed quickly by 'Who is the audience?', and in order to save me having to repeat this five times at the workshops in a couple of weeks, I will prepare a short statement that attempts to clarify this and will include it in next weeks report. I would write it now, except it is after 5pm and TGIF is in full swing and I really need a soft drink of some kind.

Enjoy the sun,

– Mike
