<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Toilet seats that are plugged into 110-volt power outlets
remain a cause of consternation, even after 20 visits to Tokyo
over the last ten years. The comfort afforded by the warmth
is more than offset by the insecurity afforded by the flashing
LEDs on the control panel characterized by most remarkable
ideograms.
These minor distractions aside, this short trip to Tokyo
with Dave Goldberg, Director of our Borehole Research Group
and Dan Quoidbach, head of the Ocean Drilling Program Site
Survey Data Bank at LDEO, has been remarkably successful and
we return home today having achieved essentially all our goals.
One important event next week is a visit by the Board of
Trustees of the Doherty Foundation - this will be on Friday,
June 18th. There will be a special seminar at 3:30 pm in their
honor followed by a reception to which all are invited. Maya
Tolstoy will be giving a very entertaining presentation entitled
'Listening to the Ocean' - so please join us at the talk and
the reception and meet the Doherty Trustees.
Now, I shall go and sit in an oxygen starved aluminum tube
for fourteen hours and emerge into the Friday afternoon rush
hour at JFK.
Have a great weekend,
– Mike
