<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
No travel this week thank goodness. This rare circumstance
combined with a certain slowness that seems to pervade the
Campus in late August has allowed me to catch up with many
important tasks. Which is good because next week I will temporarily
relocate myself upstate to contemplate a small lake while
cursing at the slowness of the email connection.
A large portion of our Marine Department staff has been in
Norway all week overseeing the final stages of the acceptance
inspections for our new research vessel. She is in dry dock
in Stavanger – if all goes well she will be sailed by
the delivery crew across the Atlantic in early September and
will be laid-up in Rhode Island while we start the process
of collecting bids from shipyards for the modification work,
and order the long-lead-time science equipment.
And while all this is going on EWING sails from Oregon tomorrow
for a major coring cruise off Alaska with Alan Mix and Nick
Pisias from Oregon State University on board.
I hope next week is very quiet. It will be where I am.
– Mike
