<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

The highlight of the week was the very successful Vetlesen Medal ceremonies in the Low Library on Tuesday night. President Bollinger and Vetlesen Trustee Chair George Rowe presided over a splendid evening during which the two awardees, Richard Peltier and Nick Shackleton, heaped great praise on Lamont, something that is always nice to hear. Seeing so many Lamonters in tuxedos was somewhat distracting, however. Most important of all, - everyone had fun. There were a large number of folks responsible for making the evening so trouble free and successful - thank you to you all.

Last week I announced Taro Takahashi's award from the Ford Motor Company - this week I announce Bob Anderson's receipt of the Huntsman Foundation's award - a prestigious medal (coincidentally won by Nick Shackleton in 1990) - that will be celebrating its 25th anniversary at the ceremonies in Halifax Nova Scotia next September. So the Geochemistry Division seems to be on a roll, winning medals every week - who will it be next week?

On Tuesday morning I met with Ellen Smith and Sonia Reese to talk about Columbia's Community Impact program - see their web site at http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ci.
I would like to figure out a way for Lamont to help this effort - check out the web site. Community Impact (CI) strives to serve disadvantaged people in the Harlem, Washington Heights, and Morningside Heights communities, providing food, clothing, shelter, education, job training, and companionship for residents in its surrounding communities. I know it is not our neighborhood directly, but there may be ways in which, with a little effort, the special talents and resources that Lamont has, could be of help……….

It is nice not to have traveled this week - but Monday it is back to DC, but just for the day.

Have a great weekend,

– Mike
