<> LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR
Our special LDEO showing of the Maya
Tolstoy-James Cameron IMAX movie 'Aliens of the Deep' on Tuesday
night down in Manhattan was a great success. Next to Open
Day this was our biggest event with over 550 folks in the
audience. I apologize for not inviting everyone to the reception
afterwards (it was a money thing…….), but it provided
an excellent venue for conversation with new friends and made
a small step towards bringing the name of Lamont to a wider
audience on the other side of the river. There was a great
Q&A session after the movie that could have gone on all
night…… Again, thanks goes to Maya for creating
this opportunity for us.
As the broader public interest in the
great Sumatran earthquake decreases, the research vessels
of the world are rearranging their schedules to allow some
preliminary surveys of the seafloor in the (extensive) region
of the primary event. I think the British have been the first
- getting one of their Royal Navy survey vessels to carry
out some preliminary multibeam surveys. I am pleased to report
that we have a proposal pending with NSF to support our participation
in a Japanese research cruise on the JAMSTEC research vessel
Natshushima later this month. Milene Cormier is the heroine
who has assembled this proposal at a few days notice. Providing
NSF exhibits sufficient wisdom and decides to fund this proposal,
we should be able to report some exciting results in late
March.
I am very pleased to announce the return
to Lamont of Alberto Malinverno, who after a few years spent
increasing the quality of research at Schlumberger Inc., has
taken on the new position of Senior Research Scientist in
the Borehole Research Group and will help Dave Goldberg in
the leadership of this ever growing unit that is playing such
a key role in the development of the new ocean drilling program.
Welcome home Alberto.
It was snowing when I drove to work this
morning, and now the sun is shining - may it stay that way
over the weekend, because I have to spend Monday and Tuesday
in windowless meeting rooms in Washington DC (again).
Have a great weekend,
– Mike
