Lab: NYC Ozone concentrations - Part 1
General Problem: Why did NYC experience high ozone levels
in
the summer of 2007?
1.) Exlore data
- Download ozone data set from website http://www.dec.ny.gov/airmon/index.php
- use
the NY Botanical garden station and Susan Wagner highschool, air
quality and weather data for the periopd June 1, 2007-Sep 30, 2007
- look at the spreadsheet and try to understand the data
- download the solar radiation data harlem_radiation_2007.csv
(Couresy of Wade McGillis, rooftop at 121st near Lenox Ave)
- alternatively, just download an Excel spreadsheet that has all
the data for this module
- convert everyting to metric units
- make preliminary plots of the data, one or two parameters at the
time, just to see what it looks
like. Look
at
- the overall variability of measurements
- the amount of scatter or noise
- in case you have to plot several parameters as time series, place
the
graph
above each other, so that correlations are easier to recognize.
- you can use EXCEL's dual axes feature to plot several parameters
in one
plot that cover very different ranges.
- save file as 'XY_ozone.xls'; ;XY being your initials
Useful unit conversions:
- from Fahrenheit to Celsius: C = (F - 32) x 5/9
- 1 (statute) mile (mi) = 1.6093 kilometer (km)
- 1 inch Hg = 33.77hPa = 33.77mbar
